Liat Yossifer "Performers from a Future Past" at Angles Gallery, Culver City, California

Liat Yossifor
"Performers from a Future Past
February 19th – March 26th, 2011
Opening Reception Saturday, February 19th, 6 - 8 pm

Liat Yossifor’s paintings explore an internal dialogue about painting. Having gradually shifted toward the abstract, Yossifor continues to navigate the relationship between figure and ground, symbol and gesture, known and unknown. Yossifor wields a seductive command of her medium. Frequently working with a limited tonal range -- almost exclusively gray with subtle tonal shifts, punctuated by the occasional stroke of black -- she allows the texture of the brush stroke to delineate form.

Performers from a Future Past breaks down the language of painting to the element of a brush stroke. Some of the brush strokes are gestural marks which indicate the artist’s own body in relationship to the canvas. These gestural marks are particularly manifest on the larger canvases, where the radius of the sweeping arcs evidences the artist’s stature in relationship to the canvases in the studio. Other brush strokes evolve into representational memes which are parts of uniforms and implements, painted in abstract codes, suggesting soldier-like forms. Yossifor works quickly and intuitively, channeling her personal narrative about national identity. Yossifor utilizes the medium of paint to explore the way history is created and remembered. The sparse black marks visually allude to forms of written history, while her process of creating symbols and then obliterating them back into abstraction documents a personal voyage to re-present history as a product
of the subconscious.

Liat Yossifor has exhibited locally and internationally, including solo shows at Anita Beckers Gallery, Frankfurt, Germany, Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, Noga Gallery of Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, Israel, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, and Anna Helwing Gallery, Los Angeles. Yossifor’s group shows include those at Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA, Sister Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London, CT, and the Museum of Modern Fine Arts, Minsk, Belarus. Yossifor received an MFA from the University of California, Irvine, recently completed a residency at Frankfurter Kunstverein, and lives and works in Los Angeles.
