Visions of Modernity. Final Exhibition at Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin

With the exhibition Visions of Modernity, Impressionist and Modern Collections from the Guggenheim Foundation, the collaboration between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Deutsche Bank in Berlin comes to an end. Deutsche Bank will continue presenting art at it’s space at Unter den Linden under the name Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, but the Deutsche Guggenheim will soon be history. To celebrate the 15 year long cooperation, the last exhibition brings together highlights of the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and thus honors the museum’s founders Solomon R. Guggenheim and Hilla Rebay, the collectors Katherine S. Dreier and Peggy Guggenheim, and the gallerists Karl Nierendorf and Justin K. Thannhauser.

Visions of Modernity presents highlights from the individual compilations of these six collectors, ranging from the Cubist paintings of Picasso and Gris and abstractions by Kandinsky, Schwitters, and Mondrian to Modigliani’s nudes and Calder’s mobiles. Among the works on display are Pablo Picasso’s Carafon, pot et compotier (1909); Franz Marc’s Stables (1913), Wassily Kandinsky’s Painting with White Border (1913); Robert Delaunay’s Les Fenètres simultanées 1912); Constantin Brancusi’s La jeune fille française (ca. 1914-18), Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu (1917); and an untitled sculpture by Alexander Calder from 1942. Visions of Modernity runs until February 17, 2013.

The show is organized by Megan Fontanella, Assistant Curator, Collections and Provenance, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Visions of Modernity is the first show that she curated on her own. In this video, we take a tour of the exhibition at the press preview and the opening reception, and Megan Fontanella talks about the concept of the show, the highlights, and her favorite works.
